I’m a huge fan of smoothies and anything with berries, which is why when acai bowls started becoming popular a few years ago, I happily jumped on board! Although delicious, the one thing about acai bowls is that they can get quite expensive. Around Orange County, I typically pay anywhere from $8-$14 for one bowl. It can easily can start to add up, especially since you can eat them whenever you want: for breakfast, a midday snack, or even an after dinner treat! But when you’re on a budget (or putting away extra cash for a 52 Week Money Challenge), you might think it’s impossible to enjoy these treats without breaking the bank. The good news is, if you have a blender and a nearby grocery store, you can make these bowls at home for way less time and money!
I went to Pinterest to browse some recipes, but I ended up deciding to adapt this recipe on my own. The great thing about these bowls is that you can customize them with whatever toppings you want or what you already have in your fridge. The only extra ingredients I needed were Sambazon frozen superfruit packs and some chia seeds from Salba Chia.
Salba Chia whole seeds
Fresh fruit, sliced (bananas, strawberries, and blueberries)
- Mix the acai pack, milk, banana and chia seeds all together in a blender for 30 seconds. Aim for a frozen yogurt consistency (it should be thicker than a smoothie).
- Pour the mixture into bowls and add your preferred toppings. This is the fun part – you can be as creative as you like with your design!
I decided to put each topping in lines to create a gorgeous and balanced acai bowl. For my first time, I think it turned out pretty good! I have never tried chia seeds in a bowl before, but I noticed a difference with Salba Chia’s seeds, which are high in protein, omega-3s and antioxidants. The seeds definitely added a little something extra and I felt more energized after finishing every last bite!
With the help of Kimberly from Belle en Rouge, she was able to film and edit a short video of how to make this delicious breakfast bowl. I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think!
