Ready for an island vacation? Isla Mujeres is the perfect day trip getaway to take while you’re staying in Mexico! It’s a little less than a 30 minute ferry ride away from Cancún and has a variety of fun activities to do throughout the island.
HOW TO GET THERE
THE FERRY ULTRAMAR | $14 US one way | $19 US round trip
The docks are located at Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas (the Hotel Zone) and have continuous departures about every hour from 9 AM – 9 PM. Find out exact times and more info HERE.
Want to hear a funny story? Here’s a little preface to what happened to us in Isla Mujeres…
While my family and I were about to exit the airport, we were stopped by an employee who told us he could give us a good price on an excursion to Isla Mujeres. The concierge at our hotel had warned us to stay away from them, but my dad can never pass up a good deal. Long story short, we ended up booking a trip there (including 4 round trip ferry passes, a full day golf cart, 4 passes to Garrafon park and buffet lunches – all for only $100 US). We should have known it was too good to be true… what we later realized is that even though we scored a bargain, we were in for a morning full of surprise. Once we were picked up, we were taken to a hotel across town for a THREE HOUR sales presentation. Did I mention it was three hours long?! Although it was a very nice property, our salesman was very sweet and we did end up getting a free breakfast, we sat through a long sales pitch (that was only supposed to be 90 min) and were forced to say a long string of “no, thank you”s to becoming members before we could start our day on the island.
Moral of the story: AVOID anyone stopping you in the airport… UNLESS you are willing to sit through a THREE HOUR sales presentation in order to save some $$$.
Nevertheless, we still had an amazing experience in Isla Mujeres and made the most of our time to do as much as we could! After spending the day there, here are my top 6 suggestions of must-do activities:
1) Rent a Golf Cart
If you are spending the day or a few days on Isla Mujeres, I recommend renting a golf cart for at least one part of your trip. You’ll find that most places charge around $50 US for a full day (9 – 5 PM) or $20 US for one hour. The island is not that big, but it is definitely worth it to get a cart. It makes it way easier to explore more of the island and is way cheaper than renting a taxi! Plus, it’s a great way to briefly escape the humidity while getting a nice breeze. You’ll get to experience the island like one of the locals… and trust me, driving around is a blast!
2) Punta Sur Lighthouse
Mónica suggested that go here first because it is the furthest point of the island and about a 20 minute golf cart ride from the ferry terminal. Punta Sur is the furthest eastern point in Mexico, with steep cliffs and a gorgeous ocean view. At the end of the island there is a lighthouse and sculpture garden which costs about 30 pesos (or $3 US) to enter.
3) Hit the Shops Downtown
Right when you step out of the ferry, you will find the main Downtown area of Isla Mujeres. This is where you will find golf cart rentals, restaurants and of course souvenir shopping! The streets are filled with colorful crocheted bags, handcrafted jewelry, and other bohemian inspired accessories. Make sure to have pesos on hand – it’s usually cheaper than paying in US dollars, especially if you don’t have change.
4) Take a Popsicle Break
After doing some shopping, my sis and I stopped for a little afternoon popsicle break at “La Paletería.” Who can resist ice cream on a hot vacation day? These popsicles were the perfect tropical treat to cool down and refresh! And the best part is that they’re only 20 pesos (a little over $1 US.)
5) Watch the Sunset at Playa Norte
Unfortunately we had to return the golf cart after making the trip to Punta Sur and almost missed the sunset at Playa Norte! Thankfully, we made it just in time to see the sun go down and watch the sky fill with beautiful colors. It is one of the more popular beaches on the island so we decided to avoid the crowds during the day, but anyone on the island will tell you that Norte’s sunsets are a must-see.
6) PLAN A PHOTO SHOOT!
A few months ago, I was scrolling through my Instagram Explore page and randomly stumbled upon Flytographer. Let me tell you about this service that is literally a fashion blogger’s dream: Flytographer connects you with over 350 photographers stationed all over the world (I’m talking 175+ cities, people!) From proposal to anniversary to family pictures, these photographers are ready to get behind the lens and capture your special moments. All you have to do is choose where you’re going – and from there, you can scroll through the list of all local photographers accompanied by their portfolios and profiles. I’m so happy that Mónica was able to capture these special moments with my family on the island! Isla Mujeres is one of Mónica’s favorite spots to shoot at so she knew exactly where and when to go to each location. Not only did she give us helpful tips and suggestions before and during the shoot, but she also made my family feel extremely comfortable the entire time, which says a lot especially since my parents usually hate taking photos!
